Mid-summer is peak riding and peak traffic. Ride smart and make the most of it.
SR-20, the North Cascades Highway, is summer-only and unforgettable, jagged peaks, turquoise lakes, and miles of sweepers through the wilderness. Fuel up, pack a layer, and make a full day of it.
Even in summer, Washington roads go wet fast and the first ten minutes are the most dangerous. Watch for gravel on pass corners, moss in the shade, and deer or elk on the mountain roads at dawn and dusk.
